We’re a group of executives, from varying backgrounds, with an interest in how AI and automation are affecting the workforce. Whether researching the topic for professional reasons or exploring the topic for personal reasons, we repeatedly found the same problem – mainstream news reports were very light on data and long on “industry expert” commentary or visions from visionaries. Freely available white papers from technology vendors were rather one-sided. So we decided to do our own research.
We commissioned an independent study called the “2018 AI Preparedness Survey,” which surveyed roughly 10,000 people in the United States who were either working in a full-time or part-time capacity, working as sole proprietors or in a “gig economy” job, or who recently became unemployed. Our goal was to understand how these people were working with AI and advanced automation technologies, how much the technologies were impacting their work life, and whether they were at risk of being displaced because of technology.
A lot of stuff! Check out our report pagesto see the topics we covered. If you buy a report, you’re helping us fund more research.
The primary research we have collected comes from a survey of roughly 10,000 U.S. workers across all but one of the 20 major NAICS codes and across 22 of the SOC occupational codes. The survey was census-balanced to ensure proper representation by age, gender and location. In instances where we received over- or under-representation in an industry or occupation, we weighted the findings to appropriately represent the industry or occupation in question.
Aside from being trained researchers, the Optimized Workforce team has extensive experience managing employees, developing talent strategy, and operating P&Ls. Oh, and we’re all employees ourselves — so the same questions and concerns many U.S. employees have about AI and the future of work? We have those too.

I work for a corporation and bought one of your reports. I want to dig deeper. Will you help me with a custom project?
Maybe. Drop us a line via the contact page and tell us more about what you need. It may be that the answers to your questions are already in our data set. We collected far more data than we can publish. Conversely, we may be able to run a quick custom study to solve your problem as well. Or someone on our team may simply know the answer to your question. We’ve been around the block a few times.
I work for a technology vendor, and that thing you wrote is exactly what I want to tell my sales prospects! Can I use your data in my sales collateral?
Probably. Depending on how you want to use it we may charge a reprint fee, or we may just ask for a citation. Drop us a line via the contact page and tell us more about what you need.
Perhaps! Drop us a note via the contact page and tell us why you’re passionate about this topic, why you think your background makes you qualified to study it, and how you’d like to help.
